Pottery -- Martha Enzler
Martha was first inspired by the relief work from the early 1900's in the American Craft Movement, and became interested in exploring the mixing of historical vs. contemporary craft, and what this would look like today. The relief designs are like old black and white photographs. Life is made up of all these small photos connected together.
Each January she start to draw the new designs for the year. Once the new designs are drawn they are transferred to clay and a carved relief is made of that drawing. In the next step, a plaster mold is made using the new relief. Once that mold has dried, clay pressings are made from it. By the beginning of Spring she is pulling the fresh new designs out of the kiln for the first time.
Martha enjoys playing with different sizes...They are great little snap shot-size wall-hanging reliefs that fit easily in little niches—above doors, in small narrow wall spaces, or as a grouping creating a larger picture together.
