Jewelry—Barbara de Veer
Barbara de Veer grew up in Berkeley, California, a hotbed for creativity and art. She studied art and design at the Universiry of California at Davis and jewelry design at New York's Fashion Institute of Technology.
Barbara was originally introduced to brilliant
colors and endless applications of glass through
a semester in jewelry design on glass fusing.
Fusing glass means heating glass in a kiln and
manipulating its shape through temperatures and
other techniques. In glass fusing Barbara found
a fun and non-traditional medium in which she
feels free to push boundaries and bring her designs
to life. In 1998 Barbara launched DeVeer Designs,
a handmade line of fused glass jewelry. All glass
elements are made in Montana and unique to DeVeer
Designs. Each piece is hand cut from large sheets
of glass, sometimes etched, layered, placed in
the kiln and heated to temperatures ranging from
1400 to 1600 degrees. After cooling slowly, the
glass is then drilled and assembled into earrings.
Ear wires are sterling silver and are they are
often handmade and are of original design.
Barbara resides in Polson, Montana where her
studio sits on the shores of the breathtaking
Flathead Lake. Her mission is to create affordable,
wearable art pieces that enhance women's self-esteem,
while maintaining the integrity of the handmade
ideal.
